-0024- Let's Make Interrobang Great Again‽
It has been almost 65 years, since Martin K. Speckter dreamed of the better world, the world where we do not waste punctuation marks. It was one gloomy night he was by the fireplace with his wife, when it hit him.
“Honey, we need to save puctuation marks! We just can’t waste two of them to express excitement, confusion, disbelief and the like … right‽”
“WTF‽”, said his wife. Even she had gotten used to her dear husbands outlandish ideas, head of the advertisement company after all, this one was far out even for him.
Legend doesn’t tell, whether they had consumed some of the local backyard chemists bicycling enducing combounds or not.
Whatever the case be, this brilliancy was realised that evening.
He called to his office, “Is there anyone who can draw‽”, he cried in his creative frenzy. From there several sketches were made and the one to rule them all was clear.
‽
How elegant. Simple, yet effective. But how we should call it, was the problem. Many suggestions were made by the office staff. Contenders included things like “exclamaquest”, “exclarogative”, “interropoint” and finest of them all “rhet”.
»Interrobang» was clearly the most relevant. Combining interrogative point and bang. 19th century meets the printer jargon. What would be more fitting‽
Why waste two characters, ?!, when you can have only one‽
‽ is superior to ?!
So … is it time for interrobang to see the greatness it deserves‽
Let’s make interrobang great again‽
Yours drooly,
